"An Explanatory Note Cannot Excommunicate"

On 2 July, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, led by Cardinal Víctor Fernández, issued a decree and an accompanying explanatory note on the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX). InfoVaticana.com notes the two documents carry very different legal weight.
The decree declares that the six bishops directly involved in the 1 July illicit episcopal consecrations have incurred latae sententiae excommunication.
Canon law permits only a declaratory decree or judicial sentence to declare such penalties, limiting the decree's legal effect to those six bishops.
The explanatory note goes further, stating that FSSPX priests are in schism, and that lay faithful who formally adhere to the schism incur excommunication.
However, the note has no penal force because it is neither a law, a penal precept, nor a declaratory decree or judicial sentence, but simply a doctrinal explanation.
Furthermore, latae sententiae excommunication requires an individual assessment of culpability and cannot …More

MEDITATION VIII
‘Institution of the Holy Eucharist’
By command of our Lord,
the major-domo had again laid out the table, which he had raised a little; then, having placed it once more in the middle of the room, he stood one urn filled with wine, and another with water underneath it. Peter and John went into the part of the room near the hearth, to get the chalice which they had brought from Seraphia’s house, and which was still wrapped up in its covering. They carried it between them as if they had been carrying a tabernacle, and placed it on the table before Jesus. An oval plate stood there, with three fine white azymous loaves, placed on a piece of linen, by the side of the half loaf …More

"Jesus was seated between Peter and John, the doors were closed, and everything was done in the most mysterious and imposing manner. When the chalice was taken out of its covering, Jesus prayed, and spoke to his Apostles with the utmost solemnity. I saw him giving them an explanation of the Supper, and of the entire ceremony, and I was forcibly reminded of a priest teaching others to say Mass."

No response has yet come from the Society, and it appears that they were not informed of the Decree and Note prior to learning about the texts from members of the press.

Holy See rules SSPX bishops excommunicated, strips faculties for two sacraments

VATICAN CITY (PerMariam) — Following the Society of Saint Pius X’s consecration of four new bishops, the Holy See has declared all six of the Society’s bishops are now excommunicated, and further warned of heavy penalties for the clergy and faithful attached to the Society. Following through with its prior warnings from May 13 and from June 30, the Vatican has now announced that the penalty of latae sententiae excommunication has been incurred by all six SSPX bishops: Alfonso de Galarreta and Bernard Fellay, Pascal Schreiber, Michael Goldade, Michel Poinsinet de Sivry, Marc Hanappier. The first two were consecrator and co-consecrator at the July 1 ceremony, while the other four were those in receipt of the order of bishop. All six SSPX bishops, July 1, 2026 The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’s Decree cites the reasons as being “episcopal consecration of four presbyters, without a papal mandate and against the will of the Supreme Pontiff,” and then for Bp. Fellay as having …

Canon law is an evolving aspect of Church life. New situations not envisaged at the time of definition are not always well served by it. Unlike Catholic dogmatic teachings and the natural law, it needs to be refined to cater for the emerging situations. Here we have a zealous adherence to the changeable on the one hand but the tyrannical imposition of the rejection of the unchangeable. A rigid legalistic imposition to serve the flux of dissolution.

Canon law highest law is the salvation of souls
Canon 1752 of the Code of Canon Law (the final canon of the 1983 Code) states that the salvation of souls must always be the supreme law in the Church.

Russia seizes mammoth cocaine haul hidden in frozen fish – FSB (VIDEO)

Security services found more than half a ton of drugs in a contraband shipment from Ecuador at a St. Petersburg port, the agency has said Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has announced that it has disrupted a major drug supply route from Latin America to the country and has seized over half a ton of cocaine hidden inside a shipment of frozen fish from Ecuador. In a statement on Wednesday, the agency said the drugs were found in a container that arrived at the Great Port of St. Petersburg by sea. The cocaine had been concealed inside legally imported frozen, ungutted tuna carcasses. A Russian citizen suspected of helping organize the scheme has been detained. An FSB operative noted that the suspect was unemployed and had been linked to a criminal group involved in cocaine smuggling. The agency released footage of the raid, showing officers detaining the man and cutting open dozens of frozen tuna with a chainsaw to remove hundreds of packages of cocaine. FSB operatives also searched …

At the time of Hildegard’s move in 1150, there was just an old ruined chapel dedicated to the eighth-century saint, while the rest of the area was cultivated as a vineyard. FSSPX Bishops Excommunicated - Clergy Declared Schismatic - Confessions Invalid

The Vatican's Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith on July 2 issued a decree excommunicating the six bishops of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX).
The decree also warns clergy and faithful not to adhere to the Fraternity's schism, stating that doing so incurs automatic excommunication.
An accompanying explanatory note says that all attempts since Pope Paul VI to reconcile the movement founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre with the Catholic Church have failed.
The recent episcopal consecrations against the will of Pope Leo XIV, it says, "constituted the offense of schism, with the resulting canonical consequences for the sacred ministers and lay faithful involved."
"The sacred ministers belonging to the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X are in schism and must therefore be considered schismatics."
Lay faithful who formally adhere to the Fraternity are likewise to be considered schismatics and excommunicated.
The FSSPX clergy administer "the sacraments illicitly": "The …More

Very old argument but stands the test. If St. Paul were here which Mass would he attend? Another old argument but immutable, if you defect from any de fide teachings or deny dogma, you are excommunicated. Mr. Fernandez, Mr. Prevost, Mr. Matteo, Mr. Kennedy your table is ready in the smoking section.

"Modernist Church Kills Everything It Touches: The newly ordained FSSPX Bishop Michael Goldade criticized the Church during today's Vespers:
"If the Catholic Church in her tradition brings forth life, the modernist church is a desert. It kills. It kills everything that it touches. It kills the supernatural life. It kills the sources of grace. It dries up everything because it has placed man in the place of God and therefore turned away from the sources of life."

Bishop Michael Goldade of the SSPX says his consecration and that of three other bishops today are signs "of the vitality of Holy Mother the Church."

"Reconciliation": FSSPX Priests Must Accept “Legitimacy of Novus Ordo”

The Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith published today the procedure for the “reconciliation” with the Vatican of former clergy of the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX), together with a separate procedure for lay faithful. (Full Italian document below).
The procedure, effective July 1, 2026, provides that a priest who has decided to leave the FSSPX must be willing to accept the Second Vatican Council and the “legitimacy of the Novus Ordo Missae,” while remaining attached to the usus antiquior (traditional Roman rite).
The priest must:
- Find an Ordinary (a diocesan bishop, a major superior of a clerical pontifical institute of consecrated life, a clerical pontifical society of apostolic life, etc.) who is willing to receive him ad experimentum.
- Write, in his own hand, a letter to the Holy Father introducing himself and requesting the remission of the censures incurred either because he received priestly ordination from an excommunicated or otherwise canonically irregular …More

Cardinal Müller: "Time to Free the Roman Rite"

The episcopal consecrations in Ecône, Switzerland, today should lead the Church to reconsider the restrictions on the Mass in the Roman rite, Cardinal Gerhard Müller told IlGiornale.it on July 1.
The restrictions imposed by Traditionis Custodes (2021) have only strengthened the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Pius X (FSSPX) by giving them "a symbol of dissent against Rome". They have "almost served as propaganda" for them.
According to Cardinal Müller, Traditionis Custodes "has not had a positive effect": "Using an authoritarian approach to demand blind obedience is not our way."
He praised Benedict XVI's Summorum Pontificum (2007) for bringing "a great deal of peace" to the Church, adding: "One cannot prohibit the rite in its ancient form."
The ancient Mass cannot be harmful when "the saints and the Fathers of the Church celebrated in this form."
Cardinal Müller rejected the claim that those attached to the ancient rite reject the Second Vatican Council, arguing instead that the …More

Glad I saw through these men years ago. Starting with Cardinal Burke. First one to run from. The one I was disappointed in slightly was Cardinal Sarah. I had my hope on him to do better and be better. I don't hear much about Cardinal Arinze. I hope he is not joining them. But I have a feeling he has. All of them lost and confused. Like The Holy Apostles when Christ was arrested they abandon Christ. Now they abandon Him again, His Church and the people. Not one stood up for Him. Not one defended Him. And it's all happening again trying to save their positions and life. Forgetting He who gave His life for us.

Cardinal Müller urges Vatican to rethink Latin Mass restrictions after SSPX consecrations

Wang publicly opposed it in 2012. He argued it would “radically transform” marriage, erase sexual difference from its definition, and harm the social recognition of mother-father family life. He also signed/sent arguments to the UK consultation and linked the Coalition for Marriage petition.
Homosexual relationships: he explicitly said “no-one denies that there can be a profound relationship between two people of the same sex,” but argued that a same-sex relationship is not the same as marriage because it cannot unite sexual difference with natural procreation.
Pornography and masturbation: in A Way of Life for Young Catholics, he says pornography causes “immense damage” and that masturbation is wrong because sexuality should lead to “open and loving relationships,” whereas masturbation “traps us in ourselves.”
Premarital sex/cohabitation: in How to Discover Your Vocation, he says sex before marriage is “sinful,” damages trust, and that cohabitation is “not a good preparation for …More

Stephen Wang is the new Bishop of Arundel & Brighton: from the Venerable English College to St Philip Howard’s Cathedral

Vatican City - Pope Leo XIV today appointed Fr Stephen Wang, a priest of the Archdiocese of Westminster and until now Rector of the Venerable English College in Rome, as Bishop of Arundel & Brighton. The diocese has been vacant since 14 February 2026, when Archbishop Richard Moth, appointed to the primatial See of Westminster on 19 December 2025, took possession of the Archdiocese. “Gratitude and trepidation, and a profound sense of peace” The Bishop-elect entrusted his first thoughts to a statement which reveals something of the man before the pastor: “This appointment has come as a huge surprise. I feel a mixture of gratitude and trepidation; an excitement and curiosity about all that lies ahead; and above all, a sense of peace. I’m grateful to Pope Leo for calling me and putting his trust in me, and to Archbishop Moth for all his care for the Diocese over these years. “I’m sad to be leaving the Venerable English College, and the Diocese of Westminster.
