Canada's Bill C-9, the Combatting Hate Act, is another veiled attack on Christian belief. It changes the criminal code to include measures to fight hate propaganda and hate-motivated crimes. The law creates new criminal offences for obstructing and intimidating access to places of worship, schools, seniors' residences and the display of hate symbols in public places. Readers may have already realized the problem with such law: who gets to define the meaning of "hate"? To get a better idea of what the law could mean once passed we can look at the recent guilty decision against Finnish MP Paivi Rasanen. She expressed her Christian views in a pamphlet and for that she was convicted of "insulting" speech. When this happens everyone becomes afraid of speaking openly and freely. Rasanen had written a pamphlet back in 2004 expressing Christian teaching on marriage and human sexuality. Today, the Vatican press speaker Matteo Bruni published a statement addressing recent media reports about a January meeting between Pentagon officials and then US Nuncio Christophe Cardinal Pierre. Bruni claims that the portrayal of the meeting in certain media “does not correspond to the truth in any way." He emphasized that the meeting was routine and part of the nuncio’s regular diplomatic responsibilities. Cardinal Pierre’s discussion with Elbridge Andrew Colby at the Pentagon was simply "an opportunity to exchange views on matters of mutual interest".
