An anonymous cardinal noted that operational contacts between the Vatican Gendarmerie and Italian intelligence agencies — originally established for protection and prevention — are increasingly being used as channels to collect or circulate information about priests, bishops, cardinals, and other Vatican figures, fostering dynamics of pressure, suspicion, and internal control.
