Redemptorists of Papa Stronsay Declare Break With Vatican

The General Chapter of the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer (FSSR) has decided to break away from what they refer to as "the new, synodal Church".

Who They Are

The order is known as the Redemptorists of Papa Stronsay, Scotland. 'Papa Stronsay' means 'Priests' Island of Stronsay'. The community owns the Scottish island and leads an austere life in this remote location.

In 1987, the small congregation of the Roman rite affiliated with the Priestly Fraternity of St Pius X (FSSPX).

In 2007, the order expanded and established a new foundation in Christchurch, New Zealand.

Reconciliation With Rome

A reconciliation process with the Vatican began in 2008 under Pope Benedict XVI, and in 2012 the community left the FSSPX to become a clerical institute of diocesan right in the Diocese of Aberdeen, Scotland.

Following years of difficulties with the Christchurch Diocese, the community lost a final appeal in the Vatican in 2025 and was prohibited from remaining in New Zealand.

Declaration From the 2025 General Chapter

At the conclusion of the current general chapter on 16 October, the redemptorists stated in an open letter that "it is no longer possible to reconcile the Faith of our Fathers with the new religion promoted by the modern Church".

The letter denounces the “post-conciliar Church” and its “synodal path” for “errors in doctrine, liturgy, and moral teaching”.

The community does not specify any new ecclesial allegiance or superior authority. It stands "before God alone, trusting in His providence".

They were shown the door, and instead of yielding to men, they threw themselves to the wilderness, fleeing scandal, heresy and apostasy... It would've been better if they stay and resist while faithful, but the higher ups wanted for them to get down from the Cross, and that's a no no.

Archbishop Viganò praises the Transalpine Redemptorists: "The principal instrument of this subversion is synodality, that is, the application of the revolutionary principles of democracy and popular representation to a divine institution that its Founder, Jesus Christ, intended to be monarchical and hierarchical. In this way, having broken the bond of obedience to God, Authority becomes absolute and tyrannical, answerable for its decisions neither to Our Lord Jesus Christ nor to the Christian people. This revolution allows the faithful to be manipulated into believing that the innovations and heresies introduced by the Hierarchy are being demanded by the rank and file, when in reality they are imposed by a lobby of those deviating from Faith and Morals."

Tolle Missam, tolle Ecclesiam

V.R.S.

"Synodality" (or collegiality as it was called at "Vatican II", BTW nihil novi sub sole) is just one of the main instruments. Pseudo-ecumenism ( incl. interreligious co-operation/fraternity), nouvelle theologie of Man and sacramental revolution are the other ones.

they are just following their conscience and they are consequent-
i am sure they prayed over their decision-
but if you give everything you have into the hands of God
he will lift you up and always care for you-
dolindo ruotolo prayed
oh jesus i surrender myself to you, take care of everything
this is what God will do for them now
God bless, protect and keep them always in your hand -
jesus take care of them
Holy Ghost inspire them and fill them with love and peace!
Holy Mary protect them
St Joseph pray for them
and help them always

Our lady of Akita said that cardinals would go against cardinals, bishops against bishops etc...sounds like that is coming to fruition

We are becoming smaller and smaller as the Catholic Church gets chipped away. Is it not possible for them to stay put and carry on, business as usual? I’m no scholar but if these men would stand up to the force that’s in the Church today, one day something may take hold, God willing.

@brhenry this comment of yours is an exercise in ignorance.
" Hip hip, just what GOD needs, one more protestant group to join the other 40,000+"
This action of theirs does not make them protestant.

brhenry

Of course it makes them protestant. They are "protesting" against the Roman Catholic heirarchy to the point of separation.

We have denounced errors, and stated that one cannot speak the truth, and live peacefully in the structures. That is all.

brhenry

Did St. Padre Pio "live peacefully in the structures?"

V.R.S.

@brhenry
Padre Pio died peacefully at the beginning of the total eclipse of "the structures".

brhenry

St. Pio lived and died peacefully (under extreme persecution) because he is a True Son of Holy Mother Church. He was not a cowardly schismatic.

K R Ross

That was true when you left the FSSPX affiliation…

V.R.S.

@brhenry
"He was not a cowardly schismatic."
---
Neither he, nor they are.
In opposition to "cowardly schismatic" activity of authors of Novus Ordo Missae, for example.

brhenry

@V.R.S. Infallibly declared by self proclaimed Pope V.R.S. the first.

V.R.S.

@brhenry
Obvious things do not invoke infallibility.
NOM has been a disastrous strike at the traditional rite of the Holy Roman Church and liturgical unity of the Church. Thus, its schismatic character is clearly visible.

brhenry

Hip hip, just what GOD needs, one more protestant group to join the other 40,000+.

Louis IX

Is the Synodal Church of Liberation Theology Marxist Homosexuals included in that number of 40,000?

brhenry

If your Mother became a harlot would she cease to be your Mother?

Louis IX

An impossibility

brhenry

My point exactly. It is impossible for a faithful Catholic to renounce Mother (Rome).

@brhenry If your mother had abused her authority for years, and rendered to her children an atmosphere of chaos and contradiction that harmed their spiritual health as well as their psychological health - would you still give her authority over you? Worse yet, suppose , though she resembled your mother in visible appearance (like an evil twin), you discovered she was not your true mother but an imposter, would you continue to recognize her as your mother?

brhenry

The visible Roman Catholic Church is Indefectible. Dogma.

@brhenry: Your statement immediately above concerning indefectibility is not wrong, just a tad simplistic. Anselm, +Manning, +Newman, +Sheen (just immediately come to mind) all speak of the structures and sacred offices of the Church being worm-ridden with apostasy. Joined with them are two of the four women Doctors of the Church - Catherine of Siena and Hildegard of Bingen.
The dogma of indefectibility guarantees the Church’s survival as the visible institution Christ founded, with its doctrines and sacraments intact. Warnings of a "counterfeit church" describe a crisis where false leaders or a heretical faction dominate the visible structures, creating an appearance of legitimacy while promoting error. The true Church, however, endures in a faithful remnant—bishops, priests, and laity—who preserve apostolic teaching and valid sacraments, even if marginalized or eclipsed.

brhenry

@Simon North "The dogma of indefectibility guarantees the Church’s survival as the visible institution Christ founded, with its doctrines and sacraments intact." Exactly my point.

@brhenry: The survival of doctrines and sacraments is NOT due to those who hold the teaching and governing offices of the Church. Separating oneself from them is NOT Protestant as you seemingly assert in regard to the Transalpine Redemptorists. They are part of the remnant preserving the doctrines and sacraments of the Church that have been denigrated, obscured and denied from those whom you SEEM to be saying we are required to recognize as legitimate teachers and governors and obey them as well. Do I misinterpret you?

brhenry

@Simon North Absolutely. Following all the Saints, we strive to become Saints within the visible structures of the Church, regardless of the hypocrisy and corruption that exists. Separating from the visible structures is never an option for a Saint.

@brhenry Then I could not disagree with you more for the reasons I mentioned in my last post.

brhenry

@Simon North You disagree with the way of the Saints? 🤔

@brhenry: My position is more than clear. Neither I nor those who think like me have abandoned the visible structure of the Church. However, we refuse to obey and we publicly decry those who hold the sacred offices of the Church who have departed from the Faith of the Saints. Heretics are NOT to be obeyed - no saint of the Church would disagree with that statement.

brhenry

@Simon North Right. Your position is not the way of the Saints, but of rebellious schismatics. Personal judgement of the heirarchy leading to disobedence to the visible Church is not an option.

brhenry

@sp2 So rebellious Roman Catholics are A-OK? Poppycock.

foward

@brhenry "The crisis of authority in the Catholic Church is now evident. In the subversives’ plan, it is intended to lead to the dissolution of the ecclesial body, replacing the Roman Catholic Apostolic Church with a surrogate of human origin and Masonic inspiration. The principal instrument of this subversion is synodality, that is, the application of the revolutionary principles of democracy and popular representation to a divine institution that its Founder, Jesus Christ, intended to be monarchical and hierarchical. In this way, having broken the bond of obedience to God, Authority becomes absolute and tyrannical, answerable for its decisions neither to Our Lord Jesus Christ nor to the Christian people. This revolution allows the faithful to be manipulated into believing that the innovations and heresies introduced by the Hierarchy are being demanded by the rank and file, when in reality they are imposed by a lobby of those deviating from Faith and Morals."

brhenry

@foward. Mother is sick, deformed and full of cancer. Still always remaining under Her Mantle, Her faithful children pray and do penance to Almighty GOD for Her recovery. But never dishonor Her Priestly Sons publicly nor abandon Her Fold.

foward

@brhenry You have to keep the same faith.
If they don't let you, it's their fault. But they can't make you obey what's wrong.
In the Creed, we profess faith in the Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church.
It is visible in those who maintain the sacraments and the faith of the Church.
I do not judge those who, for reasons unknown to me, continue with the Novus Ordo and try... But I will not judge, on the contrary, those who cannot obey what is not right.

brhenry

@foward There is no "diversity" of righteous choices. To separate is sinful. Period.

foward

@brhenry There is no unity without Catholic truth and faith.
Period.

I would say the modernists in the Vatican have split with them. The TV film CATHOLICS was considered fiction, but now it is a living reality.

V.R.S.

The frame was fictious but the essence real. A false obedience to the unbelieving prelate perfectly documented.

eva333

All congregations, orders, etc. must do the same and urgently.

All truly Catholic congregations, orders, priestly fraternities, etc. must do the same.
