Leo XIV wants to beatify controversial Aids-Priest Don Luigi. Leo XIV has opened the way towards the beatification of Luigi Di Liegro (1928–1997), a Roman priest who wanted to be close to people dying of AIDS. The pope made the announcement on Friday during the diocesan assembly in the Basilica of St John Lateran. He said he had “gladly approved” the steps necessary to begin the diocesan investigation into Di Liegro’s life, virtues and reputation for holiness. The most controversial episode of Di Liegro’s ministry came in 1988. As head of Caritas Rome, he insisted on opening a home for people with AIDS at Villa Glori in Parioli — an affluent Roman neighbourhood. It was the height of the AIDS panic. Gregory Baum, a Jewish convert to Catholicism and Augustinian priest, authored the first draft of Nostra Aetate as a theological expert at Vatican II. In his 2016 memoir, Baum revealed he had kept his homosexual relationships private during the Council, saying disclosure "would have reduced my influence as a critical theologian." Baum left the priesthood in 1974 and became an outspoken critic of Humanae Vitae, reportedly playing a significant role in the Canadian bishops' 1968 "Winnipeg Statement," which opened the door to dissent from Church teaching on contraception. He later called himself the first Catholic theologian to publicly defend homosexual relationships and remained a prominent advocate for liberation theology.

St Peter’s Basilica and cathedrals will be abused as event venues to mark a United Nations observance. On 21 September, the UN International Day of Peace, St Peter's Basilica ’s will play Sounds of Loss, an international audio installation by German filmmaker Philip Gröning. For 49 hours, 1,096 prerecorded clicks and taps will sound at irregular intervals, each intended to represent a person killed in war. Gröning and his team recorded more than 24,000 sounds - from clocks, light switches, locks, pencils and other everyday objects. The installation is designed to span 21 September across all world time zones. At the Vatican, the installation is located in the atrium of St Peter’s Basilica. The Saint-Colomban church is being built in Serris, Val d’Europe, near Disneyland Paris. The site will include a parish center, cultural center and Catholic school and covers about 4,000 m². On 18 September, three new bells were blessed and lifted into the 36-metre-high bell tower. The ceremony was led by Bishop Jean-Yves Nahmias of Meaux and auxiliary bishop Guillaume de Lisle.
