There is a tendency nowadays to depict saints as people who bypass the realities of life and somehow attain sanctity with little effort. Here we have two pictures of Saint Anthony of Padua. The first is a fresco in the basilica dedicated to the saint in Padua, Italy, and it is the oldest known depiction of the great thirteenth century apostle and miracle worker. In this picture, we see a powerfully built Franciscan, his expression young though mature, serious and determined. The second is a holy card bought in the souvenir shop of the same basilica. This depiction is obviously not inspired by the fresco. Here we see a delicate, rosy cheeked young man, his face devoid of the natural masculinity necessarily brought on by the preacher’s arduous life. His is sentimental, of soft countenance, devoid of the personality and strength of character necessary for climbing the mountain of perfection. Anthony was born Ferdinand of Bouillon of a Portuguese noble family. Early in life he engaged in …More

Leo XIV intends to visit Peru during the first half of November, Peruvian President José María Balcázar announced following a private audience with the Pope. Peru would be the centerpiece of a broader South American tour that may also include Argentina and Uruguay. Although the Vatican has not yet published an official itinerary, Balcázar said Leo XIV personally confirmed that he plans to be in Peru in November. The proposed itinerary would include Lima, Chiclayo, Piura, Pucallpa and Cusco, with additional visits to Puno and Iquitos also under consideration. The visit could last between eight and ten days. Balcázar said Peru has offered helicopters to assist the Pope in reaching remote towns in northern Peru and the Amazon region, reflecting his desire to visit as many local communities as possible. Fr Michael Mary of the Transalpine Redemptorist group at Papa Stronsay, Scotland, will receive an unauthorized “episcopal consecration” on July 25. The community announced this on June 18 on the monastery's blog. The candidate is the founder and superior of the group. He is rumoured to foster a personality cult around himself. In 2025, the group rejected the post-Vatican II hierarchy and adopted a sedevacantist delusion. The episcopal consecration is scheduled to be performed by Bishop Pierre Roy, a Canadian sedevacantist bishop. He will be assisted by Bishops Rodrigo Ribeiro da Silva of Brazil and Fernando Altamira of Argentina. All three "bishops" had previous ties to the Priestly Fraternity of St. Pius X (FSSPX). Two were ordained priests within the Fraternity, while the third was ordained by Bishop Williamson. Ordinations in the Thục Lineage Considered Null in Practice All three consecrating "bishops" derive their “episcopal orders” from the lineage of the eccentric Vietnamese …More

MessaInLatino.it published today the spiritual testament of Cardinal Camillo Ruini, signed on June 3, 2016. He died on June 16, 2026 at the age of 95. Cardinal Ruini's testament is a personal reflection on his life, giving thanks to God for his family, vocation, and ministry in the Church. More than 90% of the sentences are written in the first person singular, with verbs such as ringrazio ('I thank'), confesso ('I confess'), ho cercato ('I have tried'), and sono stato ('I have been') making Ruini the grammatical subject in nearly every sentence. The testament provides a detailed account of his family life, his work as a priest and bishop, his collaborations, and his public importance. A sympathetic reading of his frequent use of first-person pronouns (I, me, my, mine) might suggest that spiritual testaments traditionally belong to an autobiographical and introspective literary genre. The paragraph that focuses least on himself is the best one, dealing with Pope Francis's pontificate: …More

Kevin Barrett, for a heartfelt conversation on how our everyday duties and sacrifices really matter. Rooted in the Flame of Love spirituality, they reflect on Our Lady’s words from the Spiritual Diary: “Sacrifice and prayer! These are your instruments.” Together, they talk about how forgiveness, offering up daily struggles, and living with childlike trust in God can become powerful ways God uses our lives for the salvation of souls. The gift of grace, the Flame of Love, ignites conversion and blinds evil. Spiritual Diary p198: . . . . this priest understood the essential message, which is ‘to blind Satan.’ This is the principal and only purpose of the Flame of Love of the Blessed Virgin. She, herself, promised an outpouring of graces so great as have not happened on earth since the Word became Flesh. p233: Jesus: “Satan blindness …More

This carries catastrophic health risks for people, many of which can not be determined until the child is born.
Even setting aside the section about Pope Francis, this is a document worth reading. Take this line, for example: "Through my own fault, Lord, I sought to follow St. John Paul II's example in matters that aligned with my natural inclinations, but far less so in matters that would have addressed my most significant shortcomings."
