Bishop Supports Imam Release: In late November, Bishop Derio Olivero of Pinerolo publicly defended Imam Mohamed Shahin during his detention, criticizing the Interior Ministry’s expulsion order. “Mohamed Shahin has been in Italy for 21 years, has no criminal record, and has always worked seriously for dialogue and cooperation in Turin,” the bishop said. “It seems strange and absurd that he now risks expulsion for opinions: in Italy there is freedom of opinion.” Shahin is accused of statements made at a pro-Palestinian demonstration in Turin, where he allegedly described the October 7, 2023 Hamas attacks as “resistance, not violence,” and said they were “the natural outcome of 11 wars waged against the Palestinians.” The Interior Ministry interpreted these remarks as justifying terrorism and posing a threat to public security. On December 15, the Turin Court of Appeal ordered Shahin’s immediate release, ruling there was no “concrete and current” danger, though the expulsion order …More

Writing on IlGiornale.it, Nico Spuntoni confirmed that Pope Leo XIV has sent his Christmas letter to the cardinals. He thanks them for their support and describes the January 7–8 extraordinary consistory as a moment of communion and shared responsibility. The letter identifies four topics for discussion at the consistory: - Renewed evangelisation in light of 'Evangelii Gaudium'. - The relationship between the universal Church and dioceses, as addressed in 'Praedicate Evangelium'. - The Synod and synodality as instruments of collaboration with the Roman Pontiff. - The liturgy: through in-depth theological, historical, and pastoral reflection "in order to retain sound tradition and yet remain open to legitimate progress.” This quotation comes from Sacrosanctum Concilium 23, which sets out general norms for the reform of the Mass. Spuntoni hopes: 'This passage appears to leave open the possibility of discussion among the cardinals regarding how to address the steadily growing communities …More

Protestant UCC 'pastor' explains that Jesus wasn't actually born of a virgin because: "The word 'virgin' in the first century had more to do with a woman who made decisions independent of a spouse. That's the way I like to think of it, that Jesus was born to an independent woman."
James Martin, SJ: "Welcome to New York, Bishop Hicks! A great choice for the Archdiocese of New York: a gifted, hard-working and compassionate pastor close to the poor"
Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Ron Hicks, 58, of Joliet, Illinois, as the 11th Archbishop of New York. Monsignor Hicks was ordained as a priest in 1994 by likely homosexual Cardinal Joseph Bernardin. He was ordained as an auxiliary bishop by pro-homosexual Cardinal Blase Cupich, whom he owes his entire carreer. Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who has led the Archdiocese of New York since 2009, will be remembered for permitting a transvestite show funeral for homosexual activist Cecilia Gentili at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in February 2024. In all likelihood, substantively, Bishop Hicks will not differ significantly from Cardinal Dolan. First Generation-X Prelate at Major US Archdiocese Bishop Hicks will be the first Generation-X prelate (born roughly between 1965 and 1980) to hold a major U.S. see. He comes from a very different era of seminary formation. The Archbishop of New York is traditionally appointed a cardinal. From 2005 to 2010, Bishop Hicks spent five years on missionary assignment …More

To these words I answer, that God does not wish us entirely and absolutely to neglect or despise the riches and honours of this world. Abraham was an especial favourite with God; and yet he possessed great riches. David also, and Ezechias, and Josias, were most powerful kings; and at the same time most pleasing to God: the same may be said of many Christian kings and emperors. The good things of this life, therefore its riches, honours, and pleasures are not entirely forbidden to Christians, but only an immoderate love of them, which is named by St. John, " the concupiscence of the flesh, …More

Genetic engineering interventions for the prevention of infectious diseases must be stopped and banned immediately, write Bhakdi, Hockertz, Sterz, Wodarg et al. in an open letter. tkp.at Dec 13 2025 In a dramatic open letter, the most important German scientific critics of the Corona measures from the very beginning, including Helmut Sterz, Dr. med. Wolfgang Wodarg, Prof. Dr. med. Sucharit Bhakdi, and Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Stefan W. Hockertz, make it unequivocally clear: "Anyone still participating is acting criminally!" Despite all attempts at a cover-up, the extent of what is arguably the greatest crime in human history is becoming increasingly clear. Since 2020, the world has been lied to and tormented by a treacherously orchestrated fear campaign and subjected to insane measures. All of this served to make people receptive to genetic engineering experiments that were previously considered irresponsibly taboo. Since 2021, it has become increasingly clear what immeasurable suffering …More

“When we were in Rome this time (in October), he gave me the key to (my) house. That hit me big time, because it's over. He just said, "Here's a gift certificate I can't use, and here's this" (the key). He said nothing more. It's over, he's not ours”
Editor's note: This is the second segment of NCR's interview with John Prevost, the brother of Pope Leo XIV, conducted at his parish in New Lenox, Illinois, as part of the series "Looking for Leo in History." In this installment, John reflects on the years after his brother left home, from his brother Robert's time in the minor seminary and missionary life in Peru to his transition into the papacy. The interview has been edited for length and clarity. NCR: What was your first impression of going up and seeing the minor seminary where he lived? Prevost: When we said goodbye, I think there were tears all the way home from Holland, Michigan, to Chicago. I think that hit because you don't get the reality of it until it actually happens. When we were in Rome this time (in October), he gave me the key to (my) house. That hit me big time, because it's over. He always had a key to where I lived in case he was in town and I wasn't home. But now that he's pope, he gave me that key back, and that hit. …

Kale Zelden: I must say I’m struck with my fellow Catholics’ willingness to overlook the dumpster fire of our bishops, as well as the stable of bishops-in-waiting. Vanishingly few of these guys are good. Why do we all pretend otherwise? Sure there’s nothing we can do about it, but how about a little self-respect? You don’t have to act like trained seals. The selection pool and selection process are as rotten as you can fathom. Do not be clown yourself into thinking “we got a good one now!” No. We don’t… Remember: if we do get a good bishop it was because the process failed or glitched and let one get through the filter. (And it’s okay if you can’t hit the heart button or retweet it…I understand. You have professional reputations to maintain. But understand that this is part of the problem. They only want certain kinds of laymen and women.)
