Former DEA agent sentenced to prison A former DEA agent, charged in 2019 and convicted in 2024 of aiding drug dealers has been sentenced to five years in prison. WGRZ-TV BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — In two decades of kicking in doors for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Joseph Bongiovanni often took on the risks of being the “lead breacher," meaning he was the first person into the room. On Wednesday, he felt a familiar uncertainty awaiting sentencing for using his DEA badge to protect childhood friends who became prolific drug traffickers in Buffalo, New York. “I never knew what was on the other side of that door — that fear is what I feel today,” Bongiovanni, 61, told a federal judge, pounding the defense table as his face reddened with emotion. “I've always been innocent. I loved that job.” U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo sentenced the disgraced lawman to five years in federal prison on a string of corruption counts. The punishment was significantly less than the …More

Mary Live with Dr. Mark Miravalle: "They Have Lost the Meaning of Sacrifice" What does an underground Chinese bishop who has spent 25 years in Communist Chinese prisons say about Communism, Our Lady of Fatima, and Western culture's effect on the Christian "meaning of sacrifice"? Check out this edition of "Mary Live" with Dr. Mark Miravalle.
7 Sorrows Of China (Mark Miravalle) 7 Sorrows Of China $9.95 “In the most difficult periods of the recent history of the Catholic Church in China, the lay faithful, both as individuals and families and as members of spiritual and apostolic movements, have shown total fidelity to the Gospel, even paying a personal price for their faithfulness to Christ” – Pope Benedict XVI Mark Miravalle’s intense experiences as he travels through modern China provide a realistic picture of life outside of Beijing. He vividly recalls his recent trip traveling through China detailing the daily struggles of the Catholic faithful. Dr. Miravalle’s concise elegant writing style delivers a seven-image portrait of today’s China. A portrait that conflicts with the commercialized images of a recently liberated country, but a portrait that remains hopeful anyway.
A photograph shows Cardinal Zen, also now 92, at a Hong Kong demonstration in 2015 petitioning for Bishop Su. That year, the bishop’s nephew was assured that authorities would report on the disappeared bishop if Vatican relations improved. The Vatican-China agreement was signed in 2018 and twice renewed, without news. In 2020, Rep. Smith held hearings, entitled “Where is Bishop Su?” Beijing’s response was to impose sanctions on Smith. Some say that Bishop Su is dead, but there is no evidence. To be sure, the CCP wants him forgotten. It fears and won’t tolerate any religious freedom or dissent. As a Baoding priest said, “The influence of Bishop Fan or Bishop Su is actually the spirit of the older generation that affects us, encourages us and inspires us.” For these reasons, Catholics in the United States and around the world should not forget him, either. On January 13, the Sicilian bishops officially met with representatives of two homosexual propaganda groups, Cristiani LGBT+ Sicilia and In Viaggio per Emmaus. The latter is a group founded in 2020, composed of "Catholic" parents of homosexual children. The meeting was part of the bishops’ winter session (January 12–14) in Palermo, under the presidency of Archbishop Antonino Raspanti. The groups themselves had requested the meeting, which was framed within the Synodal Path of the Church in Italy. The representatives spoke of suffering caused by what they described as closed doors or indifference within the parishes. They asked to be "accompanied" in their spiritual journey and presented the history and activities of their groups. In their official communiqué, the bishops stated that “every person [except Catholics] must be welcomed and respected in his or her dignity.” They further expressed hope that “the presence of LGBT Christians could reopen doors,” adding that wounds can be …More

Ad Orientem: Why the Mass Is a Sacrifice, Not a Performance This video is part of TAN Books’ Year of the Latin Mass, a year-long initiative to restore reverence, clarity, and continuity in Catholic worship. Question: Why does the direction of the priest matter at Mass? In this reflection, Conor Gallagher explores ad orientem, the ancient practice of priest and people facing east together, and why this single outward gesture reveals the true nature of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. The Mass is not first a communal meal or a performance for the congregation. It is the offering of the Lamb of God to the Father for the remission of sins. When worship turns inward, something subtle but devastating shifts in the soul of the liturgy and in the soul of man. Ad orientem restores the original axis of worship. It reorients the heart away from what is convenient, comfortable, or entertaining, and back toward what is worthy, beautiful, and true. Facing east teaches us to ask the right question, …More
Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni has denied to journalist Matteo Matzuzzi as “completely false” the fake news claiming that Pope Leo XIV refused to grant French President Emmanuel Macron an audience. The rumours began circulating widely on January 20. The implausible story claimed that Pope Leo XIV had refused to receive Macron because of the new stained-glass windows in Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. In reality, there has been no refusal, no cancelled audience, and no diplomatic incident between Leo XIV and the French president. The unfounded report alleged: - Pope Leo XIV was irritated with Emmanuel Macron and had cancelled a planned meeting - The Pope considered the replacement of the stained-glass windows at Notre-Dame Cathedral a “travesty” - French euthanasia legislation had provoked Vatican anger - The climate between France and the Holy See was “toxic” The fake news attributed these statements to Vatican archivist and librarian Monsignor Giovanni Cesare Pagazzi.
