July 10, 2024 On a sunny afternoon in May, Zachary Galante was sitting in a conference room in St. Francis de Sales Seminary with several other young men, talking about what it meant for them to choose the Catholic priesthood in the year 2024. The next morning, they would make lifelong promises of celibacy and obedience, and they were palpably elated by the prospect. “It’s a beautiful life,” Deacon Galante, soon to become Father Galante, said. There was a time where the church “maybe apologized for being Catholic,” he said later in the conversation. He and the other new priests agreed they were called to something different: advancing the Catholic faith, even the parts that could seem out of place in an increasingly hostile world. “The church is Catholic, and so we should announce that joyfully,” he said. In an era of deep divisions in the American Catholic Church, and ongoing pain over the continuing revelations of sexual abuse by priests over decades, there is increasing unity among …More

The Priestly Fraternity of St Peter (FSSP), which celebrates solely the Mass in the Roman Rite, has elected Father John Berg as Superior General for a term of six years. Father Berg, an American born in Minnesota, was already the Superior General of the FSSP from 2006 to 2018. For the past six years, he has returned to parish ministry in Providence, Rhode Island and Omaha, Nebraska. He succeeds Father Andrzej Komorowski. He said he wanted to "continue the work of the last 6 years in the service of the Fraternity". The General Chapter of the Priestly Fraternity takes places from July 3 to July 18 at their Seminary in Denton, Nebraska. 32 capitulants were present. The FSSP says the new Mass too: “ Simply put, in Protocol 1411/99 the Vatican has ordered that any priest, even one belonging to an institute enjoying the privilege of using the 1962 Roman Missal, may freely celebrate or concelebrate Mass using the revised Missal of 1970 with no impediment whatever, the will of their superiors notwithstanding. But the Vatican went further, mandating that FSSP priests must say the new Mass or concelebrate under some conditions.” The Latin Mass Magazine: The Journal of Catholic Culture and Tradition - Articles

The Bishop of Ajaccio (France), Mgr François Xavier Bustillo OFMconv, who is also a Cardinal since September 2023, will be decorated with the "Legion of Honour" on 14 July, along with 521 other French individuals. Bustillo will be promoted to the rank of "Knight of the Legion of Honour", the lowest rang. The decoration is awarded to civilians twice a year, in January and July. "I am honoured, surprised and grateful", the regime media quote Bishop Bustillo: "I am not interested in power, but in serving everyone". Prelates who speak like this are often particularly ruthless with their clergy. Bustillo explained that he has been a priest for 30 years, serving "the Church and society", and that he tries to be present "not only in Church life", but also "in social, cultural, economic and sporting life". The decoration is strange for two reasons. First, one wonders why a servant of the Church would accept a secular award. Secondly, this decoration is particularly despicable because it comes …More

He was invited to DJ at Hï Ibiza on 11 July, in the middle of the island's high season. The event, called 'Afterlife', coincides with the 25th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. Convicted felon is a label bestowed like a scarlet letter solely to shame another. The real shame is when it is used selectively as cover for one’s own inadequacies. The famous New England author, Nathaniel Hawthorne, published The Scarlet Letter in 1850. In its time, it was a lurid Puritan New England soap opera that became classic American literature. In its pages, which shocked the Puritans of Hawthorne time, the young Hester Prynne was found to be with child, but the father was not her husband, a much older and morally ruthless Puritan man. The real father was the Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, the local Congregational minister. Refusing to reveal that truth, Hester Prynne was placed on display in the market square each day to be publicly shamed and shunned while adorned with a scarlet letter “A” for “adulterer” prominently on her dress. Nathaniel Hawthorne was well versed in the Puritan prejudices that shaped New England. His great grandfather was one of the three judges who presided …More

The Archbishop of San Francisco, Monsignor Salvatore Cordileone, has de facto asked the Vatican not to impose new restrictions on the Mass in the Roman Rite, writes NcRegister.com (9 July). He praised the 3 July open letter to Francis from more than 40 British artists, musicians and politicians defending the Mass, comparing it to the support for Notre Dame de Paris cathedral after the devastating fire in 2019. One of the signatories is well-known human rights activist Bianca Jagger. Cordileone emphasises the apolitical and non-ideological nature of the petition: "Surely 'rigidity' cannot explain such an extraordinary and diverse outpouring of love for this liturgical form". His key point: the Holy Mass inspires beauty and has attracted support even from non-believers who understand the crucial role of beauty in the creation of Western civilisation. The only downer: apparently concerned about his own reputation, Cordileone places himself in a non-existent middle ground between two supposed …More
