Public health policy on coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has focused on severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus and its effects on human health, while environmental factors have been largely ignored.

Considering the epidemiological triad (agent-host-environment) applicable to all diseases, researchers investigated a possible environmental factor in the COVID-19 pandemic: ambient radiofrequency radiation from wireless communication systems, including micro- waves and millimeter waves. SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing the COVID-19 pandemic, emerged in Wuhan, China, shortly after a fifth-generation wireless communications radiation system was set up (5G) citywide.
In this study, they reviewed the peer-reviewed scientific literature on the adverse biological effects of radiation from wireless communications and identified several mechanisms by which radiation from wireless communications may have contributed to the COVID-19 pandemic as as a toxic environmental cofactor. Crossing the boundaries between the disciplines of biophysics and pathophysiology, they present evidence that wireless communication radiation can:
- Cause morphological changes in erythrocytes, including the formation of echinocytes and rollers which may contribute to hypercoagulation.
- Impair microcirculation and reduce erythrocyte and hemoglobin levels by exacerbating hypoxia.
- Amplify immune system dysfunction including immunosuppression, autoimmunity and hyperinflammation.
- Increases cellular oxidative stress and the production of free radicals, which leads to vascular injury and organ damage.
- Increases intracellular Ca2+ essential for virus entry, replication and release, while promoting pro-inflammatory pathways.
- Aggravates cardiac arrhythmias and heart disorders.
In short, wireless communication radiation has become a pervasive environmental stressor that may have contributed to the negative health outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients and increased the severity of the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, they recommend that all people, especially those with SARS-CoV-2 infection, reduce their exposure to wireless communication radiation as much as reasonably possible until new research better clarifies the systemic health effects associated with chronic radiation exposure.
